A 2nd grade class at Palmetto Elementary in West Palm Beach, FL, created this oil on canvas painting titled “What’s in the Garden?” The painting features a tree and garden patch of healthy foods the students like to eat such as corn, lettuce, apples, oranges, and carrots to name a few. Written on the back along the wood frame are the names of each student and a message, “To: Mrs. Michelle Obama, Our Healthy First Lady.”

President Obama received this ulu in September 2016 from Denise May, Director of the Afognak Native Corporation, and Nancy Nelson, Council President of the Native Village of Port Lions located near Kodiak, AK at the 8th Annual White House Tribal Nations Conference, which brought together leaders from federally recognized tribes to Washington, D.C. This decorative ulu is made of baleen and antler on a wooden display base. Scrimshawed or carved onto the baleen is the image of an orca jumping out of the ocean. The base is made of a block of wood with a circular piece of antler and a brass support anchored at the center. The word ulu translates to “women’s knife.” Although this artifact from the Obama Presidential Collection was made as an art piece, traditionally ulus were used as all purpose knives by Inuit, Yupik, and Aleut women.

This unique shape is a popular design especially amongst the Navajo and Pueblo tribes for its symbolic design, which represents the unity of the married couple. The dual spouts are the husband and the wife bound in marriage unity, symbolized by the loop handle that creates a circle representing the couple’s life. The vase is then filled with a special nectar that symbolizes their lives bending together. It is believed that if the couple manages to drink together from the vase without spilling a drop of the nectar, they will have a strong relationship.

This carved Maori club was presented to President Barack Obama by John Key, former Prime Minister of New Zealand, during his visit to the White House in July 2011. This traditional Maori weapon with a short broad-bladed club is carved from New Zealand jade or greenstone. The artifact is contained in a wood presentation box with a plaque engraved "This Mere Pounamu was presented to the Honorable BARACK OBAMA, 44th President of the United States of America by the Right Honourable JOHN KEY, 38th Prime Minister of New Zealand July 2011. It represents the Strength, Courage, and Leadership of Our Two Nations." The piece was carved by Aden Hoglund of Hokitika, New Zealand. Hoglund works primarily with greenstone mixing traditional Maori free form with contemporary designs.

The clock was gifted to President Obama by Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, the Emir of Qatar during the U.S.-Gulf Cooperation Council Meeting in May 2015. The companion clock to Artifact FO.111279 that was gifted later to the First Lady in November 2015, this gold-plated bird clock mechanism tweets, turns, and flaps its wings once per hour. The completely mechanical bird, made by music box atelier Reuge of Sainte-Croix, Switzerland, is modeled after a common chiffchaff, or warbler. The back panel of the box lifts to access the 15 mechanical automatons made up of 500 individually made pieces. Etched into the back is text about the Islamic Golden Age and that the bird was created to honor the scholar and polymath Ismail al-Jazari (1186 CE -1206 CE). When the mechanism is wound, one can listen to the Common Chiffchaff bird sing his song on the hour.

President Obama received this mask from Ken’ichi Suzuki, Mayor of Ise, Japan, during the 2016 G7 Summit. The mask is used during the traditional masked drama and court dance known as Bugaku. It would have been worn by the character playing Ryo-O (also known as Ranryo-O), the Dragon King. The entire dragon mask is carved from a single piece of wood.

First Lady Michelle Obama received this ceramic service set from Graça Machel, widow of former South African President Nelson Mandela. The First Lady met with Mandela and Graça Machel during her visit to South Africa in June 2011. The ceramic soup bowl with its various animals in relief and giraffe ladle was made by Heritage Africa, Inc. This gift was on display in the First Lady's Office in the East Wing from July 2011 until December 2016.

First Lady Michelle Obama was presented this light blue shawl at the Cannon Ball Flag Day Celebration in North Dakota by Standing Rock Sioux Tribal Chairman Dave Archambault II and Mrs. Nicole Archambault on June 13, 2014. The shawl is used as a clothing item for Lakota women at formal social events. All shawls are made with fringe around the edge and are carried either on one arm, or wrapped around the shoulders. The tribe's emblem is sewn on the back of the shawl.

President Obama received this violin in 2013 by renowned master luthier Jamie Lazzara. The gift was commissioned by a couple of the President’s supporters in recognition of his interest in stringed instruments. The violin, based on the Stradivari model, was constructed by hand with spruce wood and natural varnish. Inscriptions from the Declaration of Independence in melted gold leaf lettering border the sides reading, "All men are created equal" and "All men are by nature equally free and independent." Includes a bow with horsehair and mother of pearl and ivory inlays.

President Obama received this signed leotard among other gifts when ten members of the 2012 U.S. Olympic gymnastics team visited the White House on November 15, 2012. The leotard, intended for the First Children, was one of two signed by the “Fierce Five.” The Fierce Five, which included Gabby Douglas, McKayla Maroney, Aly Raisman, Kyla Ross, and Jordyn Wieber, won the second team gold medal for the United States during the London Olympic games.

President Obama received this gift from artist Thomas Tenorio of Santo Domingo Pueblo, NM. Tenorio produces an array of large-scale pots and vessels that showcase traditional Kewa Pueblo methods and designs for making pottery such as techniques of gathering and processing clay and pigments, shaping vessels, and firing outdoors. This is a Kewa Pueblo polychrome (many colors) vase with black and orange designs of a flower, a bird, and various geometric shapes on a buff slip. The designs on the jar show a mix of traditional and contemporary influence. It is signed on the bottom "Thomas Tenorio Kewa, New Mexico 2009."

On August 2014, President Obama held the US-Africa Leaders Summit in Washington, DC., that aimed to strengthen ties with leaders from across the African continent. The President received many gifts during the three day summit of which was this dagger from Algerian Prime Minister Abdelmalek Sellal. Made of bronze, this is a figurine of a water buffalo or carabao pulling a mother of pearl cart on a granite base. A small plaque on the base reads: "With compliments, Mario G. Montejo." The carabao is the most useful companion and tool to rural farmers providing a source of draught animal power, meat, milk, and hide. In 2016, President Obama received this wooden German Christmas Pyramid (Weihnachtspyramide) from Chancellor Angela Merkel. Christmas pyramids are a typical German holiday decoration made of a tiered outer frame with candle holders, along with a central carousel and rotor at the top which is driven by warm air from the lit candles. This pyramid has five levels with figures on each showing a nativity scene.
